Born in Porthleven, England, Claude Dolman received his medical education at St. Mary's Medical School and graduated with a Ph.D. from the University of London. He came to Canada in 1931 as a Research Assistant and Clinical Associate with Connaught Laboratories at the University of Toronto. In 1935, he moved to Vancouver to become Director of the Division of Laboratories.
